Zyban to Quit Smoking
Thousands, maybe even millions, have used Zyban to quit smoking. You have probably heard of Zyban as either Wellbutrin or bupropion. Either way, it is an antidepressant. The drug first came on the market in the 80’s. Recently it’s been used to help people quit smoking. How Does Zyban Work?
This medication reduces nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms. For instance, in one seven-week long study, only about one out of four patients said they craved cigarettes while they were on the drug. That’s not bad, since one of the major things you have to deal with when quitting smoking is withdrawal symptoms. The normal treatment period for Zyban to quit smoking lasts seven weeks. You usually start on the medication ten days before the day you actually quit smoking. Although not really the same as nicotine replacement therapy, Zyban works the same way by satisfying your brain’s need to get nicotine through smoking. Except, it’s not nicotine that’s making you feel better. It’s the medication. Nicotine replacement therapy used patches, lozenges, gum, sprays, etc. to deliver a dose of nicotine to the body. Zyban to quit smoking has been shown to be about as effective in helping people quit as nicotine replacement therapy. With this medication, patents have about a 50% greater chance of staying off cigarettes. Are There Any Precautions To Take?
Zyban is a prescription medication, so you have to get it through your doctor. You’ll want to tell your doctor about the other drugs you take, prescription and non-prescription. Also, tell him/her about any herbal supplements and/or vitamins you take. Your doctor also needs to know about your general health condition. Also, if you are pregnant. If you drink or use street drugs the doctor needs to know that, also. (If you use illicit drugs, then smoking might not be your worst problem.) Alcohol can make the side effects of Zyban worse. But 50% is nothing to sneeze at. One great thing about Zyban is it slows weight gain in some people. People often gain a few pounds because smoking increases your metabolism, which makes you burn more calories. Zyban might be a way around this. There are other ways, such as exercise.
