Prayer to Quit Smoking
Why Prayer?
I hesitated about writing an article about prayer to quit smoking. One thing I don’t want to do with this website is to make it partisan. It’s important to me to reach as many smokers as I can so I can help as many people as I can. This is why I keep religion out of my articles, even though I have fairly strong religious views. So, when I talk about prayer to quit smoking, I’m not trying to make you see things from any certain perspective. Pray exists in all religions, and it’s prayer in general that I want to talk about, not specifically Christian prayer or Jewish prayer or Buddhist prayer. Prayer can help you solve all sorts of problems in your life! What is so amazing about prayer is you don’t even need to know how to pray. As a matter of fact, there is no set “how to”. There’s just sitting alone, being quiet, and praying in whatever way it seems natural and comfortable to pray. I know prayer works, because I have used prayer in my life for years to solve some very difficult and seemingly insurmountable problems. So I know that prayer to quit smoking will work for you. There are a few things about prayer that I would like to discuss, however, which may help you. Think of these as “tips”. Prayer Tips
Essential to prayer is belief--whether or not you're praying to quit smoking. Now, I suspect I know what you are saying when you read this. “What if I don’t believe? Does it mean prayer to quit smoking is not going to work?” No, not at all. God, the Universe, the Tao, whatever you want to call he/she/it still hears you and still moves to create solutions for you. It’s just that prayer works better the more you believe. This is actually pretty cool, because the more you pray, the more results you’ll have, the more you’ll believe in prayer, the stronger prayer will become in your life, the better your results. Someone, I forget who, said: “Prayer doesn’t move God closer to you. It moves you closer to God.” So, one important thing you need to know is you do not have to believe to make prayer work—but it does make it better. Another tip is after you pray, you’ll get better results if you let go of what you prayed for. By letting go, I mean letting go emotionally—quit focusing on the thing you prayed for. That’s difficult to do. I mean what about the work ethic and all of that. Isn’t more time and energy spent on something better? Yes, in the secular world. But not in the realm of the spirit. There was a sort of hokey button people used to wear that said: “Let go and let God.” As long as you don’t get hung up on that word “God”, then I think that phrase sums up what I’m trying to say. Just so you know, yours truly has a great deal of difficulty with the letting go part. I’m just not a letting go type of guy. I’m more of the find obstacle then destroy obstacle type of guy. But I’m learning! :) Another tip is pay attention. Prayers are rarely, if ever, answered in the way you think they should be answered. You see, God, the Universe, Spirit, the Tao does not show its face to us. God orchestrates behind the scenes. She’s kind of like the director of a play. She’s responsible for what happens, you just don’t see her. But if you’re paying attention, you see evidence of God in all things at all levels. In other words, your prayer to quit smoking might seem to have fallen on deaf ears, but don't despair. God is listening and the solutions are coming. Let me give you an example. A couple of years ago, before I decided to make making webpages my main focus in life, both personally and professionally, I told my wife that I really needed a new occupation. I was teaching mathematics at the time in high school, and I was drained physically and financially. So, I set about looking into new careers—you know, Monster.com, reading books, talking to people, etc. I prayed about this. Within the space of a week, two people my wife barely knew volunteered the fact that there were jobs available where they worked. Notice a few things about this. The information about the jobs didn’t come to me, but to my wife. Also, we learned about these possible jobs from two very unexpected sources. (FYI, I ended up not talking either of these two jobs. I decided to focus on building my own web publishing business, instead.) I’ll give you another example of how God, or the Universe, orchestrates things behind the scenes, and how solutions come from unexpected directions. A while back as I was growing my web business, I felt stuck. Things just weren’t going as well as I thought they should. So, I prayed about that. The results of this prayer were fairly amazing. I received not one, but two possible solutions to my problem. One of which was emailed to me by a person whom I’ve known about for years, but who has never sent me an email—not until that moment, at least. So, when you pray for a solution to your problem, watch out--solutions will come, but you might miss them because they come from unusual quarters in unusual ways. One more tip. You noticed that in both of these cases, I received not one, but two answers. I’ve noticed all my life that my prayers are usually answered in this way, by a choice—both of which would probably work. Why the choice? I don’t know, but I think it has to do with the fact that the Universe does not want to do our work for us, but it does want to offer us paths that we can go down which will definitely solve our problem. What’s this got to do with prayer to quit smoking? Nothing—and everything. At the beginning of this article I promised you that prayer solves problems, all of them, even the big ones. (I should know.) So I know prayer to quit smoking will work for you. So, I’m just giving you a few hints on how to pray and what to expect so that when you pray, and when the solutions come, you don’t miss them because they don’t look like what you expected. So, let’s get back to smoking. You really need a solution to your problem! I’m suggesting you use prayer to quit smoking, to find a solution. You can pray as many times as you like, but at some point let go of the outcome. Be very aware of what floats through your life—solutions are coming, and they will usually be in a form that you’re not expecting. Act on the solution. It will be the right one for you.
