How to Quit Smoking
The average smoker who actually quits has to try several different methods before they hit on one that works. A lot of people start with “cold turkey”, which works well for some…but not all. The cold turkey method does not avoid nicotine withdrawal, but meets it head on with the smoker hoping to outlast the symptoms. Some people can do this; some can’t. Don’t feel bad if you one of the ones who can’t. In my own family, I have examples of two very different responses to the cold turkey method of quitting. My father in law “saw the light” one day and just threw away the pack he was working on and never had another cigarette. My own father, however, had a very different experience. He tried to quit cold turkey more than once, only to be sucked back in to smoking a few days later. He also tried several other methods. The one that finally worked for him was a method he invented--something I’ll be writing about later. So, cold turkey does not work for everyone. Neither does any other method. There are a ton of ways to quit smoking. You just need to try method after method until you hit on the one that works for you. Other than cold turkey, there are many ways to quit. Some of the most popular are: There are others, but these are the main ways people try to quit. Are all of these legit? Yes…and no. Some are definitely fringe, like auricular therapy where you wear a magnet on your ear lobe. Quitting smoking, however, is very pragmatic. I’m not sure if it matters if a certain method works all the time, or any of the time, as long as it works for you. To learn about any of these you can click on the links provided. Remember, it really doesn’t matter if something works for your mother, father, aunt, brother, or friend. It only matters if it works for you. Choose something that “rings a bell”, that makes some sort of sense to you. That’s a clue that your subconscious might be sensing that you might be on the right path. Also remember, don’t give up! Decide to quit. Then let nothing stop you. No matter how many times you have to try!
