(There are actually 12 ways. I couldn’t stop writing them down!)

There are plenty of ways to quit smoking. Cold Turkey (just stopping) is the method most used.

Which one should you choose?

In a way, it doesn’t matter as long as you quit.

I know that sounds silly, but it’s actually true. The average smoker who quits has to try four or five times before they are successful. Some methods work better for some than others. Let me give you a couple of examples.

My father smoked—so did my father-in-law.

Both men quit, and both men lived to ripe old ages. (My father-in-law is currently still alive!)

My father tried to quit cold turkey several times when I was a little kid. Each time, he started back. He finally did quit, however, with an amazing system he designed that prevented him from having those awful withdrawal symptoms.

My father-in-law, however, just quit cold turkey. The way he tells it, he just got disgusted with himself one day and threw his pack of cigarettes in the trash. He never even wanted to light up again!

Why was it so hard for my father to quit, and so easy for my father-in-law? Was one man weaker than the other? Maybe, but I don’t think that explains the whole thing.

I suspect, if you could measure it, that my father was somehow more chemically and psychologically addicted than my father-in-law.

In a way, the details don’t matter, both men quit.

What you need to do is to find a way to quit that works for you! Then do it!
